Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Mar 4, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - The Bar Association of the District of Columbia ("BADC") condemns in the strongest possible terms the Russian Federation's illegal, unprovoked and unwarranted attack on Ukraine, a sovereign nation, in violation of international law. Since the end of World War II, the Member States of the United Nations have agreed that a sovereign state is prohibited from the use or threat of force against another sovereign state. There are only two exceptions to this principle: (1) the sovereign state is acting in self-defense; or (2) the sovereign state is acting under a resolution of the U.N. Security Council. Neither of these exceptions is applicable to the Russian Federation's invasion of Ukraine.
The BADC also stands in support of those Russian citizens who have subjected themselves to arrest or state-sanctioned harassment for publicly protesting Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The United States must take whatever actions it can to assist Ukraine short of armed conflict with Russia. The BADC is proud to support a legal and political system here in the United States where peaceful public discourse is allowed and encouraged by law. Hopefully, the Russian people can rise to the occasion, with the support of the global community, to put a stop to Russia's illegal and tragic war-making in Ukraine.
