Cubans fly around the world hunting shopping bargains

Dec 11, 2018

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Most people don't think of Haiti as a shopping destination. Unless they're Cuban. Every afternoon, hundreds of Cubans swarm a rutted crossroads in the capital of the hemisphere's poorest nation, hunting clothes, light bulbs, perfume and other goods that are in short supply back home. Haitian vendors blast Cuban reggaeton music to draw in shoppers. In a year-old cafe painted with Cuban flags, Havana-born Angelina Luis Dominguez and her niece Yeleny Terry Luis serve black beans, rice and roast pork to compatriots on lunch breaks. "There are thousands, thousands of Cubans," Luis Dominquez said. "There used to...

Fashion show blends Cuban private enterprise, US sponsorship

Dec 11, 2018

HAVANA — Models in Cuba strutted in paint-stained shirts and leather construction boots Thursday night in an unusual blend of local private enterprise and American corporate sponsorship. Google is one of the American companies that have had the greatest success in building relations with the Cuban government since the declaration of detente by Presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama. It has installed Google servers in Cuba to speed up company services...

It says the main reason people still go hungry is poverty and unequal access to good food, clean water and toilets. Many who...

BANGKOK — Lion Air, the airline whose plane crashed early Monday while traveling from Jakarta to an island off Indonesia's Sumatra with 189 people on board, is a fast-growing low cost airline with a mixed safety record.
