Pune, India - March 14, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

The travel and tourism industry consists of revenues generated by passenger airlines, passenger rail, foodservice, hotels and motels, travel intermediaries and casinos and gaming. The airlines industry comprises passenger air transportation, including both scheduled and chartered, but excludes air freight transport. Industry volumes are defined as the total number of revenue passengers carried/enplaned (departures) at all airports within the specified country or region, excluding transit passengers who arrive and depart on the same flight code. For the US and Canada, transborder passengers departing from either country are considered as part of the international segment. Industry value is defined as the total revenue obtained by airlines from transporting these passengers. This avoids the double-counting of passengers.

The passenger rail sector consists of all passenger transport by 'heavy rail' services, including international, inter-city, regional, and suburban trains ("Commuter trains" in US terminology are included). However, light rail, tram/streetcar, Metro/Subway, and similar trains are not included. Sector volumes are given in passenger-kilometers (PKM) and international traffic is counted in the country of origin. Sector values in the report consist of revenues generated by operating companies through ticket sales, and so exclude state subsidies. Foodservice is defined as the value of all food and drink, including on-trade drinks not drunk with food, for immediate consumption on the premises or in designated eating areas shared with other foodservice operators, or in the case of takeaway transactions, freshly prepared food for immediate consumption. Foodservice is restricted to the sale of food and drink in specific foodservice channels defined below and excludes vending machines.

Lincoln to Thai king: Thanks but no thanks for the elephants

Mar 25, 2018

BANGKOK — The elephant is Thailand's national animal, so it's only natural that King Mongkut in 1861 offered to send a pair to the United States as a gift of the friendship between the two countries. President Abraham Lincoln, likely bemused and relieved at the distraction from America's then-raging Civil War, politely declined, saying his country uses the steam engine and would have no use for the working animals. As part of the 200th anniversary celebrating the long-lasting relationship, the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok is showcasing historic gifts the two countries have exchanged on the grounds of Thailand's Grand Palace....

Brazil to vaccinate entire country against yellow fever

Mar 25, 2018

SAO PAULO — Brazil's health minister says the country is expanding its campaign to vaccinate people against yellow fever to cover the entire country. Ricardo Barros says that by including the final four of Brazil's 27 states, nearly 78 million people will have been vaccinated by 2019. Barros told a news conference Tuesday that 920 cases of yellow fever have been reported nationwide since July 2017 and 300 people have died from the disease. During the same period last year, 610 cases and 196 deaths were reported. U.S. health officials last week warned travelers to stay away from certain areas...

Northern Brazil overwhelmed by desperate, hungry Venezuelans

Mar 25, 2018

PACARAIMA, Brazil — Hungry and destitute, tens of thousands of victims of Venezuela's unrelenting political and economic crisis are trying their luck in Brazil — a country where they do not speak the language, conditions are often poor and there are few border towns to receive them. Many arrive to Brazil's northern border weak from hunger and with no money for a hotel, food or the $9 bus ride to Boa Vista, the capital of the Brazilian state of Roraima, known in Venezuelan circles as a place that offers three meals a day. In dozens of interviews over four days,...

Rumors, mistrust hinder Brazil yellow fever vaccine campaign

Mar 25, 2018

SAO PAULO — Elisangela Santos doesn't understand why everyone in her neighborhood on the outskirts of Sao Paulo is being told to get vaccinated for yellow fever this year. Yellow fever has long been endemic in parts of Brazil, and she smells a rat. "Every year, it's something else," the 44-year-old school custodian said as she waiting recently outside a health post in the Jardim Miriam district. "They invent another thing to make Brazilians spend money." The vaccine is free at public health posts around the country, but Santos' suspicion that someone must be profiting somewhere is typical of the...

Brazil yellow fever outbreak largest in decades; 846 cases

Mar 25, 2018

SAO PAULO — Brazil's yellow fever outbreak has now infected more people than the previous one, which had been the largest in decades. The Health Ministry said Wednesday that officials have confirmed 846 cases of the mosquito-borne disease. Of those, 260 have died. In the 2016-2017 outbreak, Latin America's largest nation saw 777 cases and 261 deaths. Large swaths of Brazil have long been at risk for yellow fever. But the previous outbreak and the current one are happening in areas not previously considered at risk for the disease and where vaccination rates were low. The current outbreak is hitting...
